It’s not often that the worlds of Argentina and Malaysia collide in international hockey and the underdogs were given a harsh lesson in finishing in Friday’s opening match of the International Super Series Hockey 9s.
While the Malaysians battled hard and caused occasional scares in the first half, the superior skills of the world’s second-ranked side meant their plucky efforts were in vain.
There was one moment for them to savour, when Ruhani Siti Noor Amarina slapped home after a penalty corner to make the score 6-1, but retribution was swift as Las Leonas responded within 60 seconds and then added three more.
Agustina Albertarrio, Carla Rebecchi and Martina Cavallero each scored twice while Mariela Scarone, Gisele Juarez, Daniela Sruoga and Delfina Merino made sure it was a long night for the Malaysians.
The pick of the bunch was probably Rebecchi’s first – Argentina’s third – as she wobbled around three Malaysian defenders and the goalkeeper before popping the ball home.
“The important thing is that we improved with the new format – it’s the first time we have played in the 9s,” said Argentine coach Emanuel Roggero. “We tried to play a little bit faster and improve our attacking play.
“The Malaysians have good technique but play very long and we found it quite easy to deal with.”
